JERO – Umiyuki

jero_umiyuUmiyuki is Japanese-American singer, JERO’s Debut Single. It was released February 20, 2008 and reached #4 in the charts. As of today, July 04, 2008, this single is still charting and has now sold a total of 233,819 copies, making JERO one of the rare enka singers to reach the top 10 these days.

First of all, I would like to say sorry to KishimotoHana for having him/her (sorry, I’m not so sure if you’re a boy or girl…) wait so long for the review of this single. I just had to do a lot of things (school things.) and I didn’t have the chance to write this last week. Again, I apologize.

Moving on to the review…

Try looking at the cover of this Umiyuki single. At first glance, you’ll think that it would contain a J-urban/rnb song but, actually, It’s the other way around… It’s a not-so-average, super enka-influenced song. It opens with a Japanese flute then the electric guitars, the drums, the violins and the maracas all come in out of nowhere. To tell you people honestly, I hated this song at first but, after having ten to fifteen listens to it, It got stuck in my head and I started to like it. Despite it having an enka style, It has wierdly catchy lines and has a great appeal. In conclusion, It’s not a bad debut for an enka singer. Especially if that singer is only 25% Japanese. lol!

The first 20 seconds of the B-side, Touzainanboku Hitoritabi, was the best part of this song. Wanna know why? Because JERO didn’t start singing badly like a wasted-cow yet. No, seriously, I don’t want to hurt anybody or anything (especially JERO) but, I didn’t like this song at all. The main reason for that is because JERO’s voice gets a lot shaky at times and the song was pure B-side material. Nice try JERO. =[
