Single Review
Makoto Kawamoto – ½

½ is Makoto Kawamoto’s 3rd single. It was released on March 21, 1997, under Sony Records, and was used as the 2nd opening theme of the anime, Rurouni Kenshin. Releasing ½ was the reason why she got more fame in both Japan and America.

tracklist:
01. ½
02. 1
03. ½ (Original Karaoke)

One of my all-time favorite anime theme songs is ½. Not only because it was a part of Rurouni Kenshin, but also because it never fails to put a smile on my face whenever I listen to it. I know that some people know about Shoko Nakagawa’s version in her 2nd mini-album. If I were to be asked, I’d say both versions sound the same. Of course they contain different vocals but, their overall arrangement and sound were alike. Well, despite both version’s similarity, I like this version better. Why? Because for me, It’s original, and it’s a classic. It brings back good memories of me and my sister watching Rurouni Kenshin, and would often hear this songs at the opening credits. Well, what can I say? It’s very memorable! It’s simple, catchy but man, It’s AMAZING! I didn’t even know that an anime song can be as excellent as this! Anyway, The instruments also played a big part in this song since it added more flavor to it. Esspecially the guitar. The guitars were cool, and the sound it produces is catchy. To sum it all up, ½ is pretty darn-good! Every moment of it is not a waste, and everything about it was perfect. Highly highly highly RECOMMENDED!

The b-side, 1, was a bit of a step-down. Don’t get me wrong though. It still sounds good but, some moments of it was dull. Makoto’s vocals were perfect with the guitar as usual but, the song wasn’t as memorable as the previous track. The whole song contained an 80’s acoustic feel to it, which I think was the most appealing thing about it. One wierd thing about it is that I found the verses better than the chorus. Maybe it’s the reason why I think some parts of this song was dull. This song is not that bad, but it’s not that impressive either. For me, it’s just an “okay” track.
